The Patient Platform: a common work tool between patient and staff

Odense University Hospital (OUH) works continuously to improve the patient experience and streamline workflows. The idea behind the Patient Platform is to create a common digital solution for patients and staff that increases patients' involvement and their abillity to take care of their illness.

PROJECT PERIOD

Start: 1 August 2024
End: 31 July 2025

AIM

The goal of the Patient Platform is to ensure a good and efficient implementation at the new OUH, where patients can be involved to a greater extent and take control of their treatment course. It aims to create better communication between patients, relatives and staff as well as provide more person-centred treatment, especially for patients with cognitive impairments.

THE PROJECT'S STRUCTURE

The project will be carried out in two pilot departments to gather experience from different patient groups. In the Department of Cardiology, the focus will be on implementing and assessing the use of high-priority applications such as video consultation with relatives and treatment overviews, which give patients the opportunity to follow their treatment course. The staff in this department have already worked significantly with digitisation, which makes it an ideal department to test and further develop the Patient Platform.

In the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, the project will adapt the platform for patients with cognitive impairments. This department has many patients with dementia or other forms of cognitive challenges, and here the Patient Platform will be equipped with sensory-stimulating content to reduce insecurity and restlessness. The purpose is to investigate whether this approach can improve the patients' experience and create more peace and security during admission.

The implementation will take place in close collaboration with the clinical staff through workshops and daily introductions. The assessment focuses on both the implementation process and the specific effects on patients, especially those with cognitive impairments. Observations and interviews will be used to gather data and experiences that can be used to improve the platform before it is rolled out at the new OUH.
