Presentations and debate at WHINN

The first session was a panel discussion on citizen-generated data and their role in the future healthcare system. Here, the conversation went merrily among both the panel and the audience, and some of the key points were:

• we will see more individually adapted solutions within the healthcare system in the future.
• data is something we give to each other; it can create value for others if we can share and gain
• better knowledge of health data.
• efforts are underway to make it easier to share data.
• there is an untapped potential in using health data for prevention.
• we have a high degree of trust in the healthcare system, and we must protect it.

The panel consisted of:

• Laura Duus Dahlin, political consultant, Dansk Erhverv
• Thomas Schmidt, lecturer, PhD, Health Informatics and Technology, University of Southern Denmark
• Johanne Flowers Parning, team leader, senior consultant, Centre for Health Innovation (SINO), Danish Regions

The second session was on PRO as part of hospital treatment, and here we heard two examples from Odense University Hospital:

Maria Monberg Feenstra, PhD student, spoke on PRO in the treatment of endometriosis, which is a chronic and painful disorder where the same tissue as inside the uterus forms outside the uterus. She described how PRO can make patients more active in treatment and emphasised the need to incorporate PRO into the organisation so that there is time to handle and react to data.

Camilla Littau Nielsen, PhD student, spoke on PRO in the investigation of sleep disorders, where she, among other things, examines the significance of switching from physical consultation to examination via PRO. She remarked: “Who knows where the shoe pinches? The one who wears the shoe knows”.

In addition, Kirstine Skov Benthien, postdoc, clinical nursing specialist, Hvidovre Hospital, Palliative Unit, Department of Endocrinology, spoke on the evaluation and the clinical effects of PRO, and Cecilie Lindström Egholm, postdoc, specialist consultant, the Danish Knowledge Centre for Rehabilitation and Palliative Care, spoke on implementation of PRO solutions.
