Renewing Health

RENEWING HEALTH (REgioNs of Europe WorkINg toGether for HEALTH) was a European project where nine of the strongest European regions within welfare technology and telemedicine came together to develop and assess solutions and services for patients with chronic health problems.

PROJECT PERIOD

Start: February 2010
End: December 2013

The 7,900 patients in the project were taken from the large chronic sufferer groups Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), diabetes or cardiovascular diseases.

To ensure the right solutions, the new services needed to be documented and assessed thoroughly, and RENEWING HEALTH played an important part in doing so.

AIM

RENEWING HEALTH was to systematically assess existing telemedical solutions to provide knowledge and basis for decision-making for distribution in the regions and across the EU. The project illustrated the effect of the telemedical solutions, and all of the solutions were assessed based on MAST model to ensure a coherent assessment. By doing so, it was possible to achieve a reliable basis for comparison for the telemedical solutions and their efficiency.

RESULTS

The project resulted in a range of working solutions, i.e. the COPD suitcase and telemedical ulcer treatment at Odense University Hospital. Other projects were initiated as a direct continuation of the good results from RENEWING HEALTH, i.e. United Health, Carewell and Beyond Silos.

In addition, the project validated the MAST model for assessing telemedicine, and at the behest of the European Commission, a European union was established for the management of MAST.

ASSESSMENT

In the assessment process, the clinical, organisational and economic effects were examined in a randomised study based on the MAST model.

EXTERNAL FUNDING

The Renewing Health Project has received financial support from EU through the “ICT Policy Support Programme (ICT PSP)”, which is a part of the “Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme” within the European Commission.
