CICA inaugurated

On Thursday 17 January, a new, excellent research center was inaugurated at Odense University Hospital. The centre CICA – Centre for Implementation of Camera Capsule Endoscopy – will research the use of camera capsules for bowel examinations.

After the welcome and introduction of i.a. regional council chairman in the Region of Southern Denmark Stephanie Lose and chairman of the Health Committee in the Region of Southern Denmark Poul Erik Svendsen, those present could see pictures and video from a trip through the intestine of both camera pill and traditional colonoscopy and learn more about what it is all about.

Finally, Professor Esmaeil S. Nadimi from the Maersk McKinney Moller Institute at the University of Southern Denmark spoke about the potential for artificial intelligence in the context of camera pills for bowel examinations.

FACTS ABOUT CICA

CICA is a good example of how you can bring clinical and technical research together and solve healthcare challenges in new ways. In December, the centre received the distinction of Centre for Clinical Excellence together with a grant of DKK 7.5 million from the regional council in the Region of Southern Denmark.

The centre's activities are divided into seven different areas, which will deal with general aspects of camera pill examinations and more specific research within different patient groups. In addition, there will be a focus on the development and use of artificial intelligence in connection with the camera pill examinations.

The centre is based at OUH's Department of Surgery in Svendborg, and professor within gastrointestinal surgery, Gunnar Baatrup is the centre manager. It is a partnership between both clinical and technical research areas represented by OUH's Department of Surgery in both Odense and Svendborg, the Centre for Innovative Medical Technology, the Maersk McKinney Moller Institute at the University of Southern Denmark, the endoscopy departments and gastroenterologists from Vejle and Esbjerg, the Research Unit for General Practice and sundhed.dk. The centre will also have a strong international network.
