EARTH (model for early assessment of innovative technology)

The model EARTH (EARly Realistic assessment of innovative medical Technologies in Hospitals) is an evaluation model for early assessment of the expected value of innovative medical technology. Value must be understood as the expected future effect on clinical, patient, financial, technical and organisational aspects.

An early assessment is used to support decisions about development in a project, as hospital management or steering group can use the early assessment to decide whether it makes sense to develop further on the innovation project.

EARTH has a total of six steps and is an ongoing assessment of whether:

  1. selected key performance indicators develop positively
  2. the risk level is reduced during the early development of the innovative technology
  3. evidence and documentation for the expected effects is strengthened over time.

Background for EARTH

There has been an increase in the development and use of innovative medical technology in hospitals both in Denmark and in the rest of the world, but it can be difficult to foresee the implications of new technology and the chances of successful implementation.

Therefore, it is relevant early in a development process to be able to critically assess the technology and its expected value, so that the hospital can use the resources on the new initiatives, which have a high probability of achieving the expected gains and making a positive difference when they are implemented in daily life operation.
