MAST (Model for Assessment of Telemedicine)
MAST (Model for ASsessment of Telemedicine) provides a solid base for decision making when it comes to the introduction and use of telemedicine.
The model defines the relevant assessment framework for the effect of telemedicine:
- the patient and the technology
- patient safety
- clinical effectiveness
- patient perspectives
- economic aspects
- organisational aspects
- legal and ethical aspects
MAST is developed by Kristian Kidholm, Professor of Innovation and Head of Research at the Centre for Innovative Medical Technology (CIMT). The model is the most widely used framework for the assessment of telemedicine in Europe, and the European Commission recommends the model for the evaluation of telemedicine projects.

MAST APPLIED
MAST is applied in various contexts where there is a need to evaluate telemedicine and e-Health. In 2014, the National eHealth Authority (NSI) and the National Coordination Group for Telemedicine in Denmark instituted the drafting of a new checklist for managers in the healthcare sector when they are to decide which telemedical solutions to implement. The checklist is based on the Danish experiences with both mini HTA (Health Technology Assessment) and MAST. It was drafted in collaboration with the unit for Health Technology Assessment at CIMT.
In March 2015, the committee of eHealth in the Region of Southern Denmark decided to make the checklist mandatory in all decisions made by the Region of Southern Denmark concerning the implementation of telemedical solutions.
MAST is applied in other organisations than hospitals; for instance in the assessment of a major welfare technological project between 11 municipalities in the Region of Zealand in Denmark. In addition, MAST is used to evaluate telemedicine and eHealth technologies by a wide range of Danish organisations working with eHealth and technology in the healthcare sector.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) also use MAST in the Framework for the Implementation of a Telemedicine Service.
